Most medieval carvings of elephants show that the carver has never seen one.
This is a very good representation with the exception of the feet which resemble those of a horse.
In 1255 Henry III was given an elephant which he kept in the Tower of London
and so the carver was not just relying descriptions given by travellers from the East.
