Under the bench are two rabbits, one looking out of its hole , the other disappearing into it.
(This is reputed to be the only carving of a rabbit entering a hole.)

In the carpenter Lanfert's yard Bruin is enticed by Reynard with the promise of honey in a cleft in an oak held open by a wedge.
He is caught when the wedge is removed, and is then attacked by Lanfert and his companions.
